Understand it to prevent it

During the 2018-2019 academic year, our District 2041 joined forces with other Italian Districts to promote a nationwide project called “Food Waste: understand it to prevent it”. Our goal was to raise awareness among younger generations on food issues and on strategies for preventing food waste.

Members of the Rotary Clubs of the Milan area used printed and digital resources to teach primary school pupils about the problems of food waste. The participating Districts developed all teaching materials under the scientific guidance of Professor Andrea Segrè and in collaboration with Last Minute Market.

The Food Waste project has been incredibly successful in our Milan district, not only because of its unquestionable social importance, but also because it was driven by the motivation of our Milanese Rotarians, spurred on by the knowledge that this was an action of substance, supported by thousands of other Rotarians in Italy.

The Rotary clubs that participated in the project were responsible for recruiting schools and for delivering presentations to the children: clubs with experience in delivering on school projects collaborated with those that had none.

Rotarians also handed out booklets with information on the topic of food waste to each student (and to their teachers), so that they in turn could explain what they had learned to their parents and friends.

This project started at the beginning of the 2018-2019 academic year. By April 2019 Rotarians had talked to students in some 120 classrooms within our District 2041 and had distributed over three thousand Rotary Italy booklets on Food Waste to the children.
